Wanaka and Queenstown institution Erik’s Fish and Chips owners Erik and Anna are passionate about Kiwi takeaways and the outdoors. Their caravans near Lake Wakatipu and Lake Wanaka offer the best of both: bite into the deep fried goodness of a lightly battered Hoki while drinking in the breathtaking views.
Erik’s, as the name suggests, is family owned, and Erik and Anna are devoted to reflecting their love for the environment — and native trees — through their business. “There is nothing better than going for a walk in our gorgeous New Zealand forests”, Anna reflects. As well as minimising wastage, sourcing ingredients from eco-conscious suppliers, and using recycled packaging, the couple have chosen to support Trees That Count in increasing the native tree count for future generations.
So far, Erik’s have worked with Trees That Count to donate 25 trees to Dunedin’s West Harbour Beautification Trust, an organisation working for biodiversity enhancement from Ravensbourne through to Aramoana. Erik and Anna’s community engagement also extends much further than their famous deep fried kiwifruit offering: they’re heavily involved with mentoring programmes, children’s reading initiatives, and donating to schools events.
The couple run their business with a community philosophy, partnering with organisations to make as many contributions as they’re able to environmental care: and they encourage others to do the same. “If we all took some ownership to help conserve native trees, together we can make a real change! Any size contribution helps.”
